Web 2.0 meets HPC - IBM IDataPlex
Feb 27th, 2009 by admin
IBM recently announced the IDataPlex , a scale out hardware solution for Web applications. It is a flexible, high performance high density, low power solution. Basically a grid in a box. This Xeon based system is a good alternative to commodity blades whcih can offer 5X compute capability and 40% less power draw. Although originally designed for the back end of websites, it fits well in the HPC space and IBM are now targeting marketing directly at grid blade replacement. Quite right too.
It is likely that we will see other high density, low power solutions emerging from competitors in the near future. And this in turn will help us increase compute while not having to increase datacentre space.
